Modi did Yoga under Rain Roof

PM Modi participated in a mass Yoga demonstration event in Lucknow on the occasion of 3rd International Day of Yoga 2017.
Thousands of people gathered for the event at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan despite continuous rain in the city.

Dressed in a white T-shirt and loose white trousers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the stage in Lucknow with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who too performed yoga in the light drizzle.

What PM Modi said?

  • Yoga-Connecting the world: Yoga has become a part of many people’s lives. He said Yoga’s popularity is high even outside India; and Yoga has connected the world with India. “Many countries which do not know our language, tradition, or culture, are now connecting to India through Yoga,” said PM Modi.
  • A medium to achieve wellness: “I am glad to see several Yoga institutes take shape over the last three years, and the demand for Yoga teachers is increasing. In addition to fitness, wellness is important and  Yoga is a medium to achieve wellness.”
  • A free Health Insurance: Urging everyone to make Yoga a part of their lives, the Prime Minister said that Yoga is about health assurance, and it is not even expensive to practice.
  • Enlightens Body and Soul: “I request people to make yoga a part of their life. We may not master yoga or become teachers but we should not stop from doing yoga,” he said. “Yoga not only enlightens the body but also the soul.”

Rain Yoga

It rained heavily this morning. In Lucknow, people were seen using yoga mats as umbrellas and raincoats as yoga mats. Owing to heavy rains and water logging at the venue, Modi jokingly told the large gathering — where people used the yoga mats to shield themselves — that he had now learnt the benefits of the yoga mat as well.

Modi -an Inspiration: says Children

Some schools kids who did not fear rain, said “we did not run away, and in fact we enjoyed it when we saw PM Modi coming down amid rain to do yoga with us. He could have escaped rains while being under shade on stage. We are inspired and we will follow this.”

National and International attendance

Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Vijay Goel, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the BJP’s presidential nominee, Ram Nath Kovind, joined the celebrations in Delhi’s Connaught Place.

Other senior union ministers led yoga sessions in different parts of the country.

In Ladakh, jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police performed a yoga session at 18,000 feet and a temperature of minus 25 degrees Celsius.

Officers of the Indian Navy held yoga events on board the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and at the naval dockyard in Mumbai.

Over 200 million people were estimated to have participated in the event last year, a figure the government hopes to beat this year.

International Yoga Day is being celebrated in nearly 180 nations. Some of them, including China and UK, have scheduled events through the week. The United Nations headquarters in New York has been lit up with images of yoga postures.
