Patna: State BJP president, Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, said here on Thursday that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, once enacted into a law, will lead to administrative efficiency and financial transparency of the Waqf Board, which, in turn, would result in the multi-fold growth of its income.
The (Rajendra) Sachchar Committee report had assessed that if the property under the Waqf Board is used properly, then its annual income could jump to Rs 12,000 crore. The aim of the present amendment bill, passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, is to augment the income of the Waqf Board to Rs 12,000 crore annually on the line suggested by the Sachachar committee, Jaiswal said.
Jaiswal, while talking to reporters, said in the same vein that the annual income of the Waqf Board in 2019-20 was Rs 166 crore, but it fell to Rs 104 crore in 2020-21, Rs 61 crore in 2021-22, and Rs 14 crore in 2023-24.
He alleged that the Waqf Board, at present, is plagued by corruption, misuse of the Waqf property and also forcible occupation of its property, among other ills. He also played the video clip of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who in 2010, had said in the Lok Sabha that the Waqf Board law should be made very sakht (stringent), adding that the Waqf property on Fraser Road in Patna had been given cheaply given on lease to several groups.
The aim of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 is to make an efficient administrative arrangement, enforce financial transparency and prevent the misuse of the Waqf property, Jaiswal said, adding that the increased annual income of the Waqf Board could, in turn, be used on welfare activities of the poor and also skill development of the youths.
