Perplexity’s agentic AI browser – Comet is now available to Mac and Windows users for free. Powered by the company’s own search engine, the browser is designed to help users who rely on the internet for work. research and other tasks.
Previously limited to Perplexity Max subscribers, Comet is unlike traditional browsers like Chrome and Firefox in the sense that, instead of a tabbed interface, it has a workspace which gives you quick access to all the information you are looking for. In the last few months, millions of users had joined the browser’s waitlist to try it out.
The browser’s main feature is Comet Assistant, an AI-powered assistant which you can bring up like Copilot in Edge. Using the AI assistant, users can ask questions about a webpage, summarise content, and even navigate web pages on their behalf. Comet can also track what a user is looking at, what they have read, and what they are working on, and suggest related content based on their preferences. The browser also closes inactive tabs after a while and sends reminders of what they were doing in their previous sessions.
Also, every new tab you open will have its own Comet Assistant, meaning users will be able to ask different questions in parallel. Comet users can also use other tools like Discover, which offers personalised news and content recommendations like OpenAI’s Pulse, a Shopping assistant for quickly comparing prices and finding the best deals online, Travel, Space, Finance and Sports, to name a few.
However, not all Comet features are available to free users. For example, the Email Assistant, which helps users draft replies to emails that match your tone, is currently limited to Max subscribers. Another feature that is available for paying users is the new “background assistant”, which can perform multiple tasks on your system in the background while you do other work.
Perplexity Comet wants to bypass the hassles of dealing with traditional search engines and is aimed at users who use the internet for work. This may lead to a slower adoption rate, but users who browse the web every day for work might find it more useful than simple browsers like Opera and Chrome.
