Arsenal boosted their Premier League title hopes with an important 2–1 win over Chelsea on Sunday. The victory restored their five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who had beaten Leeds a day earlier.
Jurrien Timber scored the winning goal in the second half. Arsenal are now closer to winning their first league title since 2004. Their biggest remaining challenge could be their upcoming match against Manchester City next month.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team feels they must keep winning because the competition is so strong.
“We have the feeling that we have to win and win and win. You win so many games, but it is not enough to open the gap. That is the level of this league,” Arteta said.
Chelsea pushed hard for a late equalizer, even after going down to 10 men. Goalkeeper David Raya made a crucial save near the end, and Chelsea also had a late goal ruled out for offside.
William Saliba gave Arsenal the lead from a corner in the first half. Chelsea equalized through an own goal by Piero Hincapie, but Timber later scored with a header from another corner to secure the win.
Manchester United Boost Champions League Hopes
Manchester United climbed to third place after beating Crystal Palace 2–1.
“It feels like a big result,” United captain Bruno Fernandes said after his team beat Palace.
Benjamin Sesko scored the winning goal, his seventh in eight games. Bruno Fernandes also scored from the penalty spot after Palace defender Maxence Lacroix was sent off.
United have improved under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is unbeaten since taking charge in January. He has won six of his seven matches so far. Carrick said it feels good to see the team playing with confidence again.
Across his two spells as Manchester United coach, Michael Carrick has earned 23 points from his first nine league games. According to stats provider Opta, this is the joint-highest points total ever by a manager after their first nine matches in Premier League history — matching the start made by Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.
“This place means a lot to me so to have the sort of positivity and everyone enjoying going to the games and watching it and for me to have an influence on that, I’m not going to lie, it feels good,” Carrick said.
Palace had taken an early lead through Lacroix, but United showed strong character to come back and win.
“We were behind so we had to show some character,” Fernandes said. The result gives us the chance of getting third but there are a lot of games still to go. We have a lot to do and it is important we don’t feel like we are already in the place we want to be.”
Tottenham and Forest Struggle
Tottenham’s poor form continued with a 2–1 loss to Fulham. Spurs have now gone 10 league games without a win and are just four points above the relegation zone.
Fulham scored twice in the first half through Harry Wilson and Alex Iwobi. Richarlison scored for Tottenham in the second half, but it was not enough.
Nottingham Forest also lost 2–1 to Brighton and remain close to the relegation zone. Forest have now lost two straight games under their new coach, Vitor Pereira.
