Silchar: The three-day second biannual conference of the Bangla Sahitya Sabha, Assam, began in Silchar on Tuesday with a resounding call to foster a deeper cultural affinity between the twin Barak and Brahmaputra valleys of Assam.
The chief guest of the inaugural session, Assam PWRD, animal husbandry and veterinary minister Krishnendu Paul, in his speech as the chief guest, expressed unwavering optimism regarding the Sabhas ability to perpetuate the initiative of the current BJP govt in bridging the cultural chasm between the people of the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.
Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, concerted efforts were undertaken to bridge the divide between the people of these two regions, thereby facilitating a profound exchange of cultural ideas and values. This commendable endeavour has, in turn, fostered a profound sense of shared identity between the two regions, the minister said.
Paul underscored the paramount importance of these endeavours, stressing that they play a pivotal role in strengthening the social fabric of Assam and guaranteeing the peaceful coexistence among the states diverse communities.
Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, in his speech, emphasised the Sabhas pivotal role in organising the literary convention. He highlighted the govts commitment to fostering the regions culture and language, with a particular focus on the development of the Bengali community. Reassuring the Sabha of the govts support, he said, Land will not be a problem for the Sabha. We are hopeful that the demand for land for the Sabha will be fulfilled soon. He advised the committee members to submit a memorandum to the district commissioner regarding the land.
Bangla Sahitya Sabha, Assam central committee secretary Prasanta Chakraborty, outlined the objectives of the three-day convention.
Veteran BJP leader and former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha was honoured with the ‘Assam Bandhob title. It was received by his son, social worker Kanad Purkayastha. He said, I am thankful to the organisers for honouring my father.
Several notable speakers addressed the gathering, including Sabha President Khagen Chandra Das, reception committee President Nihar Ranjan Paul, Chairman of the Assam Linguistic Minorities Development Board Shiladitya Dev, Asom Sahitya Sabhas Chief Secretary Debojit Bora, veteran journalist Bijoy Krishna Nath, Mayor of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Saikat Patra, social worker Kanad Purkayastha, and Jadav Chandra Sharma.
