“The roads are blocked but we are working on reaching there. Locals have claimed that this was a cloudburst but we are verifying those facts. A few shops have been washed away but there has been no loss of human life,” said district disaster management officer, Rishabh Kumar.
Debris has also entered shops in the main market damaging several structures, including two small hotels. But even teams from SDRF and fire department could not reach the spot due to road blockages, said sources.
Heavy debris was also seen flowing near the IT Park. Videos of rain related damage across Dehradun are circulating widely on social media.
Schools in the district have been closed for the day and a red alert has been issued till 9 am. Authorities have urged people near river embankments to stay safe and alert.
The rivers in the district including Tamsa, Tons and Song are in spate. The approach bridge at Maldevta has been washed away during the night, essentially cutting off the area.
The Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple has also been damaged and rubble has covered almost the entire premises. Chairs and other material kept there have been washed away.
Heavy rain damage has also been reported from nearby Rishikesh and Mussoorie towns.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah spoke with Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami over the phone today to get a detailed update on the situation arising from heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand. They assured all possible assistance, emphasising that the Central Government stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of crisis. CM Dhami expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, informing them that the administrative machinery is fully active in the affected areas, where rescue and relief operations are being carried out on a war footing, the CMO said.
