Sharmila Dhankars historic gold leads Indias tenmedal haul at CWG 2026

India delivered its strongest performance yet at the Commonwealth Games 2026, collecting six medals on Day 5 to take its overall tally to 10. The days highlight came from Sharmila Dhankar, who created history with gold in the womens shot put F57, while Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare and Valluri Ajaya Babu secured silver medals, and Bindyarani Devi and Shilpa K. Shyla added bronze.

Dhankar became Indias first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist in para athletics after registering a season-best throw of 9.81 metres in the womens shot put F57 event, according to ESPN. India also celebrated a double podium finish after Shilpa K. Shyla was upgraded from fourth place to bronze following the disqualification of Nigerias Eucharia Iyiazi. Ghanas Zinabu Issah took silver with an effort of 8.65 metres.

Sarvesh Kushare also entered the record books by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the mens high jump at the Commonwealth Games. The national record holder cleared 2.25 metres but lost the gold on countback to Jamaicas Romaine Beckford, who cleared the same height with fewer misses. Englands Kimani Jack claimed bronze with 2.20 metres.

Weightlifting continued to drive Indias medal campaign, contributing three more medals and taking the countrys tally in the sport to six. Commonwealth Games debutant Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the womens 53kg category with a personal-best combined lift of 199kg (88kg snatch and 111kg clean and jerk). She successfully completed all six lifts and briefly held the Games record in the clean and jerk before Nigerias Onome Omolola Didih broke it on the way to a Games-record total of 206kg.

Bindyarani Devi followed with bronze in the womens 58kg category, finishing with a total lift of 199kg (87kg snatch and 112kg clean and jerk) to add to the silver she won at the Birmingham Games. Nigerias Rafiatu Folashade Lawal retained her title with a Games-record total of 229kg, while Canadas Ann Sophie Taschereau took silver with 215kg.

In the mens 79kg event, Valluri Ajaya Babu narrowly missed gold after finishing with a total of 330kg (149kg snatch and 181kg clean and jerk). The 22-year-old from Andhra Pradesh set a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 149kg, but Malaysias Muhammad Erry Hidayat edged him by one kilogram with a Games-record 184kg clean and jerk for a winning total of 331kg. Scotlands Chris Murray settled for bronze with 325kg.

India also recorded several notable performances outside the medal events. Long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar (8.01m) and Lokesh Satyanathan (7.77m) qualified for the mens long jump final, while Tejas Shirse advanced to the mens 110m hurdles final after clocking 13.76 seconds in the heats before finishing eighth in the final. Gurindervir Singh exited in the mens 100m heats after placing 28th overall with a time of 10.39 seconds.

In swimming, Olympian Sajan Prakash reached the mens 200m butterfly final before finishing eighth, while Aryan Nehra placed seventh in the mens 800m freestyle final. Para swimmer Swatik Patil qualified for the mens 100m breaststroke SB9 final and ended fifth.

Indias boxers enjoyed another productive day, with Sachin Siwach, Ankush and Sakshi Choudhary progressing to the next round with victories in their respective bouts. Sumit Kundu, however, bowed out after losing to Northern Irelands Jon McConnell in the mens 70kg round of 16.

Elsewhere, gymnast Protistha Samanta finished seventh in the womens vault final, while Putul Sonowal lost his mens singles sectional play match in bowls.

At the end of Day 5, India had accumulated 10 medals — two gold, five silver and three bronze. The countrys medallists so far are Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar (gold), Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare and Valluri Ajaya Babu (silver), and Bindyarani Devi, Shilpa K. Shyla and Jhandu Kumar (bronze).
