Shreyas Iyer out of ICU, condition stable after spleen injury

Shreyas Iyers health remains delicate but stable. As first reported by Cricbuzz on October 25, the BCCI has assigned the team doctor to monitor him closely, and the 30-year-old is understood to be recovering well. Iyer has also been moved out of the ICU.

On Monday, two days after he suffered a fall in the cover region while taking an acrobatic catch in the third and final ODI against Australia at the SCG, the board issued a statement saying, Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.

Sources say Iyer is out of danger, although he appears to have suffered some internal bleeding from the impact while taking the catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana. He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Sydney, with travelling Indian team doctor, Dr Rizwan Khan, constantly by his side.

A few local friends have also been keeping him company, and a family member may fly to Sydney from Mumbai once the visa formalities are completed. The family was unable to apply over the weekend, delaying the process slightly.

As of Monday, it is not clear when Iyer will return but sources say that all concerned - the BCCI, the team management, Iyer, his family and his personal staff - do not want to rush him back and he is expected to stay put in Sydney till he fully recovers. He may remain in hospital for a couple of more days.

The next assignment for Iyer, who is being considered only for the ODI format by the national selectors at present, is the three-match series against South Africa in a months time and it remains to be seen if the teams vice-captain will recover totally for the three games - on November 30, December 3 and 6.

The Indian team, meanwhile, has reached Canberra, where they will play the first of the five T20I on October 29.
